Matthew is a vibrant, smart and a courageous young boy that was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the tender age of 11. Our family froze in disbelief knowing this journey will be one of the most challenging time in our lives. Our family had to work as a team with all focus to Matt. He had his surgery in Sick Kids and had 6 cycles of chemo in McMaster Children’s hospital.
While on treatment, although very difficult, Matt tried his hardest to stay positive and with the help of Child Life in McMaster Children’s hospital, they kept him busy with fun conversations about anime, anything Marvel, Nintendo, etc. Like any other 11 year old boy, he is the biggest anime fan, video games, and dreams to visit Japan one day to experience going to anime stores, see the culture, and enjoy the food. After many conversations, we were approached with the idea for Matt’s wish to be granted. This idea itself lifted his spirits because it’s something that he always wanted and it’s something that he was looking forward to. It’s all he talks about ever since.
Fast forward to his last day of chemo, Matt bravely fought osteosarcoma and is in complete

remission. He felt even better and was so highly motivated to get back to normal-something we take for granted. More importantly, he was excited for our upcoming trip. We visited family in the Philippines then went to Japan. We spent Christmas with family in the Philippines that not only comforted him but the whole family. We went to Japan as he wished. We stayed in Osaka visiting Kyoto, Universal Studios and experienced Dotombouri. He was just over the moon for this once in a lifetime experience that we will never forget.
Matt thankfully is doing well now and is still in complete remission and is closely monitored by his oncology team in Sick Kids and McMaster Children’s Hospital. He is graduating Grade school this year. He is doing well in school and is proud of his battle scars. We are grateful for the doctors, nurses, all healthcare staff and organizations like Guelph Wish fund who held our hands and helped, cared and supported Matt (and our family) navigate this unwanted disease. This is something that we will never forget and will be forever grateful.
