Logan is almost two and a half years old, and he has an interstitial lung disease called Neuroendocrine Hyperplasia of Infancy, or NEHI for short. Our journey began when Logan was just six months old. He caught his first virus—RSV—and was hospitalized at McMaster Children's Hospital for 44 days. Despite all efforts, he struggled to recover, and we left the hospital two days before Christmas with a tentative diagnosis of a prolonged recovery from RSV.
However, just two weeks later, a gastro bug swept through our home, and Logan began having breathing difficulties again. This led to another week in Grand River Hospital before he was transferred back to McMaster Children's Hospital. This time, we spent 64 days there while they ran test after test, eventually leading to the diagnosis of NEHI. With that diagnosis in hand, we were finally able to bring him home, now with the support of oxygen therapy.
Since then, Logan has had several hospital admissions whenever he catches a tough virus. These long stays have been incredibly hard, especially since my husband and I have three other children at home. It’s been difficult for all of us, as being away for weeks at a time meant Logan missed out on precious time getting to know his siblings, and my absence weighed heavily on the family, with the hospital being too far for regular visits.
The Guelph Wish Fund has been such a blessing to us, allowing us to enjoy fun, memorable experiences as a family and make up for lost time. Logan’s hospitalizations not only impact our time together, but they also mean I miss work, making it harder to afford family outings. Thanks to the Guelph Wish Fund, we’ve been able to enjoy these moments without the financial stress, and it’s given us the chance to create lasting memories together.
None of this would be possible without the incredible generosity of the donors who support the Guelph Wish Fund. On behalf of myself, Logan, and our entire family, I want to extend a huge thank all of the Guelph Wish Fund supporters, your support means the world to us.
